About this product

Biography (by Alex Henderson) There are two very different metal bands that have used the name Black Dawn. One is a Scandinavian death metal/black metal outfit from Finland; in the early 2000s, that band recorded an album titled Blood for Satan for Necropolis (a tag that is known for putting out a lot of death metal, black metal, and grindcore by Scandinavian artists). The focus of this bio, however, is an alternative metal combo that has been active on the New York scene since the early '90s. In fact, New York's Black Dawn has made a point of stating that it's members have no connection to the Finnish band; on their website, the New Yorkers state, 'We have nothing to do with Satanism, black metal, Necropolis Records, or a disc called Blood for Satan.' The Black Dawn profiled in this bio goes back to 1992, when guitarist Tom Kelly formed the band's original lineup on suburban Long Island. At first, Kelly thought of Black Dawn as something that he would do on the side. But as time passed, he found himself devoting more and more of his time to the band; whose forceful and intense yet melodic style of alternative metal has been influenced by Metallica and Pantera as well as Testament (specifically, the albums that Testament recorded in the late '80s and early '90s; before Testament reinvented itself with 1997's ferocious Demonic). Black Dawn has also been compared to Megadeth and Venom; it's alterna-metal isn't thrash metal per se, but it has been influenced by some of the bands that have come out of the thrash field. After playing in and around New York for several years, Black Dawn acquired a small following in the Northeastern United States. Black Dawn had been together for five years when, in 1997, it recorded it's self-titled debut album for the Long Island-based Suicidal Groove tag. That CD was followed by the 1998 EP Live at CBGB, which was recorded at the famous

Gershwin / Royal Scottish National Orch - An American Paris / Piano Concerto in F / Lullaby - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Somm Recordings closes the 120th anniversary year of George Gershwin's birth with the re-issue of the historic 1998 Centennial Edition recording initiated by the composer's sister, Frances Gershwin, together with first appearances of two orchestrations commissioned from José Serebrier. Originally released on Dinemec Classics, the Gershwin Centennial Edition features the composer's nephew and Frances' son, pianist Leopold Godowsky III, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra conducted by José Serebrier. The recording followed a concert in London organized by the composer's formidable sister, Frances - 96 at the time - who invited Serebrier to conduct An American in Paris, the Concerto in F, and, in specially commissioned orchestrations by Serebrier, the Three Preludes and Lullaby. The programme shows Gershwin at his inimitable, era-defining best. Composed as an extended ballet sequence for the 1951 MGM musical starring Gene Kelly, An American in Paris is a buoyant, Technicolor-bright tribute to the French capital shot through with jazz-accented vitality. The Concerto in F is a bold, brassy, brilliantly orchestrated work with a grandstanding piano line bridging the worlds of classical music and jazz. It's animated opening movement is followed by a Blues-tinged Adagio and a finale boasting a helter-skelter orgy of rhythm and athletic pianism. Initially reluctant to orchestrate Lullaby, Serebrier says InchNow I am glad Leopold persuaded me. I have tried to keep the scoring as simple and pure as possible, so that the orchestral version of this poignantly lovely piece might take on a life of it's own in a voice that is still recognizably Gershwin'sInch. The never before re-issued is a brilliant reminder of one of the most remarkable talents of the 20th century in performances by one of his greatest interpreters. Album Tracks 1.
