About this product
One would be hard-pressed to come up with a better descriptor for Black Elephant's Cosmic Blues than the title of the album itself. Based in Savona, Italy, the four-piece have conjured ghosts of '70s heavy and masterful '90s riffmongering to offer a brew both potent and thoroughly modern. Cosmic Blues is their third album behind 2014's Bifolchi Inside and 2012's Spaghetti Cowboys (get it?) and marks their debut on Small Stone Records. Comprised of lead vocalist/lead guitarist Alessio Caravelli, rhythm guitarist Massimiliano Giacosa, bassist Marcello Destefanis and drummer Simone Brunzu, Black Elephant make their mark in their home country's booming heavy rock underground with memorable songs and a sound that's just as comfortable getting funky on InchChase MeInch as it is reimagining Soundgarden as a riff rock outfit à la peak-era Dozer, rolling out huge grooves en route to InchCosmic Blues for Solitary Moose,Inch loaded with fuzz and scorching solos. Given a brisk, live sound in it's production - fitting for a group with hundreds of shows under their collective belt - Cosmic Blues comes across natural and at times maintains the intensity of Black Elephant's' earlier work (closer InchInnoInch walks by and waves), while simultaneously exploring more spacious realms in the not-a-cover InchHelter SkelterInch and the takeoff jammer InchBabyeroina,Inch which eases into and out of it's nodding rhythm with a smoothness worthy of a group's third album and a fluidity that typifies the record's entire 34-minute run. Leaving their own tracks in the footsteps of bands like Small Stone's own Isaak, Black Elephant hit a new level of craft with Cosmic Blues, and if the righteous drive of opener InchCosmic Soul,Inch the flowing progression of the LP that ensues, and the name they've given the whole affair are anything to go by, they know it for sure. Double vinyl LP pressing. The inimitable GYBE returns with another soundtrack for our times. As the heretical anarcho-punk spirit of the title implies, Godspeed harnesses some particularly raw power, spittle and grit across two riveting 20-minute side-length trajectories of noise-drenched widescreen post-rock inexorable chug blossoms into blown-out twang, as some of the band's most soaring, searing melodies ricochet and converge amidst violin and bassline counterpoint. Field recordings and roiling semi-improvised passages frame these fervent epics, and two shorter self-contained 6-minute pieces find the band at it's most devastatingly beautiful, haunting and elegiac. Poignant atmospherics, noise-drenched orchestration, drone, hypnotic swingtime crescendos, inexorably-layered towers of distorted clarion sound STATE'S END encapsulates every beloved facet of the band. Twenty-five years on, this new album is as vital, stirring, timely and implacable as any in Godspeed You! Black Emperor's storied discography. Recorded and mixed by Jace Lasek, the veteran award-winning indie producer (and co-founder of The Besnard Lakes) who works with Godspeed for the first time on this recording. ?Double vinyl edition is audiophile 180gram LP + 10Inch pressed at Optimal (Germany) in gatefold jacket w/thermographic print, colour flood interior, artworked inners and DL card.
