About this product

Set during the early days of Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship, Chile '76 builds from quiet character study to gripping suspense thriller as it explores one woman's precarious flirtation with political engagement. Carmen (Aline Kuppenheim, A Fantastic Woman) leads a sheltered upper middle class existence. She heads to her summer house in the off-season to supervise it's renovation, while also performing local charitable works through her church. Her husband, children, and grandchildren come back and forth during the winter vacation, bringing reminders of the world beyond. When the family priest asks her to take care of an injured young man he has been sheltering in secret, Carmen is inadvertently drawn into the world of the Chilean political opposition and must face real-world threats she is unprepared to handle, with potentially disastrous consequences for her and her entire family.

The Pinochet Case - DVD

In September 1998, Pinochet flew to London on a pleasure trip, and shortly thereafter began experiencing back pain and underwent an operation in the London Clinic. Upon waking from surgery, he was arrested by the London police. The case against Pinochet had begun in Spain two years before his arrest. THE PINOCHET CASE explores how a small group of people in Madrid laid the groundwork for this incredible feat - catching a dictator 25 years after his rise to power, making him the first to be humbled by the international justice system since the Nuremberg trials. THE PINOCHET CASE also follows the workings of the British legal system that issued the arrest warrant, and the testimony of scores of Chileans, most of them women and relatives of the disappeared, which proved crucial to the case against the general. Their stories are likely to lead you to tears, Time Out New York proclaimed upon the film's theatrical , concluding, this film certainly ranks among the best recent documentaries.

The Battle of Chile - DVD

On September 11, 1973, President Salvador Allende's democratically-elected Chilean government was overthrown in a bloody coup by General Augusto Pinochet's army. Patricio Guzmán and five colleagues had been filming the political developments in Chile throughout the nine months leading up to that day. The bombing of the Presidential Palace, during which Allende died, would now become the ending for Guzman's seminal documentary, now newly restored, THE BATTLE OF CHILE, an epic chronicle of that country's open and peaceful socialist revolution, and of the violent counter-revolution against it. Also included in this is Guzmán's debut feature, THE FIRST YEAR, which chronicles the jubilant 12 months following the election of Allende. Restored and digitized under Patricio Guzmán's supervision, this version features a short introduction to Chile and it's history by documentary legend Chris Marker, who adapted the original film into French. These two films provide an invaluable opportunity to witness the genesis of Guzmán's body of work and to gain insight into a critical period in Chilean history.
