With painstaking stop-motion animation-and shifting of the action to 20th century fascist Italy-director Guillermo del Toro delivered a dark and diverting read on the Collodi classic unlike any before, as the grief-stricken Geppetto (voided by David Bradley) crafted a pine effigy (Gregory Mann) of the 10-year-old son he lost-and which, after being incredibly imbued with life, would come to learn of humanity. Oscar-winner also features the voices of Ewan McGregor, Tilda Swinton, Christoph Waltz, Cate Blanchett. 117 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack English Dolby Atmos; Subtitles English (SDH); featurettes.

In InchBefore SunriseInch (1995) American traveller Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and French student Celine (Julie Delpy) meet while on a Vienna-bound train and share a mutual attraction. With less than 24 hours before having to go their separate ways, the two decide to explore their feelings and Vienna at the same time. A change of pace for director Richard Linklater, this delicate romance features affecting performances and gorgeous scenery. Then, in Linklater's warm and funny follow-up, InchBefore SunsetInch (2004), Delpy and Hawke return as the former lovers, reunited nine years after their whirlwind romance. While in Paris on a publicity tour for the book he wrote about his encounter with Celine, Jesse once again crosses paths with his old flame, and the pair discuss the past while contemplating the possibility of falling in love again. And, finally, another nine years have lapsed, and the trio of Linklater, Hawke, and Delpy has reunited for InchBefore MidnightInch (2013), another wistful visitation with lovers Celine and Jesse. Now long-committed, if unmarried, Celine and Jesse use the twilight of a vacation in Greece to reflect on the toll taken upon their amour-fou by the realities of a relationship. 4 3/4 hrs. Total.
