On the left side are two USB-C ports and one mini-HDMI port that allows you to connect up to 3 different sources to the monitor. The folio cover also functions as a stand. The right side contains a headphone jack, a rotary knob that functions as both a volume and menu button, and a button that has 3 different functions (power ON/OFF, source select and return back button). Basically, you can use the rotary knob to adjust the volume. If you press down on the rotary button, it brings up the menu screen for the monitor where you can adjust the picture settings. You navigate through the menu items and sub menus using the rotary knob. To back out of a menu item, you can press the power button which I found to be somewhat unintuitive. A long press of the power button turns the monitor ON/OFF. When the monitor is powered up, a press of this button brings up the Source Selection Menu. I found the way the buttons work to be slightly confusing. It took me a while to figure out how it works. The screen is a matte screen so there is no problem with glare. Image quality is great with rich colors and sharp text so it’s good for media consumption and productivity work. Because of its portable and lightweight nature, this is a great monitor to take along with your laptop to increase your productivity by having dual screens. Your laptop must support DisplayPort over USB-C if you intend to use the USB-C port. Because of the Vesa Mounts on the back, you can even use this in your home office as a regular monitor or part of a multi-monitor setup. Despite having speaker looking ports on the back, it does not actually contain any speakers. Windows allows you to output sound to the monitor, but the sound is only available from the headphone jack. Summary The Insignia NS-156PM Portable Monitor is a great portable monitor. It’s very lightweight so you can easily take it along with your laptop to increase your productivity by having a dual screen setup when working remotely. Because of its Vesa Wall Mount, you can also use it as a regular monitor or as part of a multi-monitor setup in your home office. It’s very flexible. The image quality is excellent with rich colors and sharp crisp text making it good for media consumption and productivity work. Overall, I think it’s a good value.

This is a perfect laptop companion, whether you’re always on the go and need more screen real estate or simply want to extend your workstation at home. I personally have a permanent multi-monitor setup in my home office that I can’t live without, so when I travel with just my laptop, I’ve always wished I had a second screen. I was eager to try this because I think I’m exactly the target audience for it. The monitor itself is very lightweight and comes with a folio-style case that doubles as a stand. If you’ve ever used an iPad or tablet with a folio cover, it’s very similar. The cover protects the screen when it’s not in use and has built-in grooves that provide two different viewing angles. My only real complaint is that the grooves aren’t very rigid, so it’s easy to knock the screen into the other position or completely out of the groove. I would have preferred a more secure locking mechanism. As for the monitor itself, it does exactly what I need. It’s 1080p at up to 60Hz, which is perfect for this type of use, especially at this price point. Connecting it is incredibly easy. If your laptop, phone, or other source can provide both video and power over USB-C, you only need a single cable. You can also power the monitor separately and connect your source through another USB-C port. There’s also a mini HDMI input if you prefer that connection, although it requires separate power. The monitor has the usual settings for brightness, contrast, color, sharpness, etc. One thing that initially fooled me was the audio. It has a 3.5mm audio output and sound-related settings in the menu, and there are even two areas on the back that look like speaker grilles. However, there are no built-in speakers. If you’re using something like an iPhone or tablet and need audio, you’ll need headphones or another device connected to the 3.5mm jack. With a laptop, you can simply use the laptop’s built-in speakers. Overall, this is a great travel companion for anyone who wants more screen real estate on the go. It’s lightweight, easy to use, and does exactly what it’s supposed to do without breaking the bank.

This is just what I’ve been looking for to help me in my remote work sessions. Not only do I work from home, but I like to work on AI projects as a hobby in addition to my day job. This includes visiting people to collaborate ideas or just going to a coffee shop to do some work, and coming from a 3-monitor setup at home on my desktop, its really difficult working off one monitor remotely. I love the size of it, thinner than most tablets, and it has a magnetic case/stand with it. Its super compact, you can see my comparison photos next to my laptop and my Surface Pro. It has 2 connector types, and 2 USB-C options because if your source does not provide ample power, you can use one of the USB C ports to plug in USB-C power. My Macbook or Surface Pro didn’t have any issues powering it though, just a simple plug and play and it was working. The monitor also features a full set of settings and controls, like you would find on a regular monitor which I was surprised by. It has the rocker on the side to help navigate the menu, adjust brightness, or if you’re plugged into the 3.5mm headphone jack you can control the volume with it. I’m not sure why it needs the 3.5mm jack since I’m pretty sure most laptops have something similar, but I guess better to have an option than not have it. I do have to admit, when I was setting up the monitor I thought there were speaker grilles/holes in the back, making me think they were speakers. I’m not sure if that’s for cooling, but it does not appear to be for sound, at least I could not find any information to support there being speakers on the monitor itself. It got my hopes up, but oh well, I still have my computer for sound. It also has optional mounting in the back for those wanting fixture or stand for it. Overall it’s a perfect companion for working remotely or maybe in a shared desk or office space. Its also good for meetings if you want to show what your looking at without everyone sitting closely next to you viewing your laptop monitor. The video quality is good and what I expected for a portable monitor. I could easily see myself getting a second portable monitor to complete my 3 monitor setup remotely. Its definitely a game changer for us nomads!

I was a bit confused regarding the internal speakers or sound capabilities. The back panel makes assumption that the monitor might have an audio. It has an audio jack! After checking the specifications I found that the 3.5 mm audio jack only passes audio through to headphones or external speakers via USB-C from the source. I was expecting it to come with a mini-HDMI to HDMI cable or adapter. That would be great. Any ways, most new tech are heavily relying on the USB-C for all kind of connections. As for the price: it sits a little high compared to third party alternatives that bundle more accessories and cable with some times integrated audio. This Insignia is still more premium and seems to be lasting longer than the other alternatives - unknown brands... Why you should buy it? If your daily workflow relies on multipe windows and reference documents, this monitor eliminates the frustration of single-screen multitasking when traveling. The dual USB-C deign ensures a clean, clutter-free desk setup. The screen quality delivers the clarity needed for long work sessions without eye strain. Colors setting are very good. It could be also used in a fixed office as a side monitor for scripts or schedules checking.

Nice compact second screen which works perfectly as my work requires a second display. This hits the requirement perfectly as it allows me to multitask with ease, allowing me to have my monitoring on my laptop and an additional application open on the second screen so there is no need for me to maximize and minimize screens to jump between application. Getting this up and running was easy as my laptop recognized the screen immediately. Only thing I needed to do was go into display settings and select extend display. By default it duplicated the display so what I saw on my laptop was on the display until making the change to extend. Responsiveness is excellent as my mouse cursor seamlessly moves between screens with no issues. Color rendering is great as is the clarity and everything displays clearly with no issues. I did not have to make any changes to color or contrast as everything is perfect for my needs. The display is bright. I tend to work near my window and the residual light from outside does not impact the display at all. Even with bright sunlight coming through the window, the screen is extremely readable and bright with no glare. Overall, this is a must have for anyone who needs a second display. The display is light and easy to carry in a backpack with a laptop as it doesn’t add much weight. This second screen had been used daily since receiving it and will continue to be used daily going forward. Overall excellent display and I highly recommend it.
