In the story, a couple who recently died in a car crash become ghosts trapped in their idyllic country house, haunting the place. With her designer Otho, Delia plans to remodel the house. The ghost couple tries to scare the family but fails and hides in the attic. They are contacted by a spirit who calls himself a freelance bio-exorcist, claiming he can get rid of the living. The couple is warned by Juno, a social worker from the afterlife, not to summon Beetlejuice, and that they should scare the Deetz family away themselves. Despite the warning and forming emotional bonds with young Lydia, after a second failed attempt, they summon Beetlejuice by calling his name three times. He appears, causing chaos and planning to marry Lydia as his way of escaping the Neitherworld, the land of the dead, inhabited by ghosts and undead, so he can wreak more havoc.
