John Barbirolli - Dream of Gerontius - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Barbirolli made two earlier recordings of Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique in 1947 (mono) and 1958 (early stereo), both with the Halle Orchestra. This new live recording with the SWF orchestra in Baden-Baden from 1969 is in state-of-the-art stereo sound and does full justice to Berlioz's wonderful score. Likewise, Haydn's Symphony No.83 the Hen always remained a Barbirolli favorite. He first recorded it in 1949 in mono but here it is captured in excellent stereo 20 years later and released in 2013 for the first time. Album Tracks 1. Allegro Spiritoso 2. Andante 3. Menuet Allegretto - Trio 4. Finale Vivace 5. Rêveries - Passions 6. Un Bal 7. Scène Aux Champs 8. Marche Au Supplice 9. Songe D'une Nuit de Sabbat

John Barbirolli - Symphony No. 2 [COMPACT DISCS] date 02/25/2014

Sir John Barbirolli began as an orchestral cellist, and played under Elgar's baton in the premiere of the Cello Concerto. Encouraged by Elgar, he moved into conducting and made his mark with the composer's Second Symphony in 1927. After Elgar's death, Barbirolli vowed to make the composer's music his special mission in life and to do his utmost to make it known all over the world. From the performances here, we can judge how well he kept his promise. Album Tracks 1. Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85 I. Adagio - Moderato 2. Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85 II.
