Jovino Santos Neto - Alma Do Nordeste ( Soul of the Northeast ) - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Two of Brazil's finest keyboardists, Jovino Santos Neto and André Mehmari, have joined forces to honor composer and multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal. Jovino is a three-time Latin Grammy nominee and amongst the most respected Brazilian musicians of the day. A respected educator, a valued sideman, and a master composer and arranger, he (as does Pascoal) considers his music beyond category, neither classical, jazz, nor Brazilian, rather Inchabove it all.Inch Andre Mehmari represents the best of the younger generation of Brazilian musicians, highly regarded in both popular and classical worlds. Both Santos Neto and Pascoal were heroes of his growing up. To celebrate Hermeto's 80th birthday, they selected ten mostly unrecorded gems from his vast archive, and the result is rich with creative abandon, joyful rhythm, and telepathic interplay. Lightning Bolt play with abandon that is unmatched and remarkably undiluted since the duo's formation 25 years ago. They are often called one of the loudest rock outfits in existence, both on record and on (or famously, off) the stage. Brian Gibson creates sounds that are unexpected and remarkably varied with his virtuosic bass playing and his inventive approach to the instrument, centered around melody rather than rhythm. The dizzying fury of Brian Chippendale's drums twist from primal patterns into disorienting break beats as his distorted, looped, and echoing vocals weave more melody into the mayhem. Amidst the fray there has always been shreds of a pop songs discernible in the eye of every Lightning Bolt song. For their seventh full length, Sonic Citadel, Gibson and Chippendale have done the daring, stripping away some of the distortion mask to reveal the naked pop forms as never before. Their relentless energy, inventiveness and, unrestrained joy still drive their songs, pulling you in and compelling you to bounce and yes, even sing along. In the four years between album releases, each member's increasingly prolific creative endeavors limited their time to create together. Brian Gibson was the sole artist, musician and co-designer of the acclaimed video game Thumper, which has since proliferated across a multitude of platforms, and won countless awards including the 2019 Apple Design Award. Brian Chippendale, who has always created the band's visual art, released the graphic novel Puke Force, was included in Rolling Stone's Inch100 Greatest Drummers of All Time,Inch and recently collaborated with fashion designers Eckhaus Latta. The impact that Lightning Bolt has had on underground music since it's inception is immense, and remains pervasive beyond any genre tag that has been attached to them. Sonic Citadel is the work of band unafraid to challenge themselves, unbo

In a recurrent dream of mine, I find myself in a room full of pianos of all colors and sizes, and I am free to walk around and play them as I wish. This dream became a reality, thanks to Richard Zirinsky, Jr. from Adventure Music and Jim Luce from Klavierhaus, who made it possible for me to come into the Fazioli Piano Salon in New York and make myself at home. And what a home it was a treasure room full of amazing instruments, just waiting to be played. I selected one Fazioli concert grand, which was then tuned and adjusted to my playing style, and went on to play whatever music flowed into my mind over three evenings, pressing the record button as I took a journey into the heart of a beautiful piano. Over the course of the recording, I could feel the Fazioli changing it's voice to fit my playing, as my touch and dynamics changed to explore the feel and the sound of the piano. It gave me a sensation of connection and symbiosis, a fantastic musical experience. Out of those sessions we selected the music on this CD - a blend of old and new standards, original compositions and free improvisations. The high-definition recording captured every nuance; I can even hear the air in the room as I listen to the tracks. I dedicate this music to all those who love the voice of the piano, and I hope that the sincerity and honesty of the performance touches each heart that listens to it. - Jovino Santos Neto, Seattle, Washington - December 2011.
