About this product
Emilio Sagi's colorful 1970s-inspired production of Rossini's 'L'Equivoco Stravagante' is performed by Marco Vinco, Marina Prudenskja and Bruno de Simone with the Orchestra Haydn of Bolzano e Trento conducted by Umberto Benedetti Michelangeli. L'equivoco stravagante was written on 1811 and its Rossini's first two-act comic opera, the only one written for a theatre in Bologna (his adoptive home after he abandoned Pesaro). A truly peculiar opera; not so much in its music but with the text written by Gaetano Gasbarri which led the work being ostracized from theaters for nearly two centuries. Directed by Emilio Sagi, Davide Mancini. Starring Bruno de Simone, Carmen Santoro, Paolo Pucci. Language Italian

Rossini wrote L'equivoco stravagante ('The Curious Misunderstanding'), his first full-length opera, when he was only 19 years old. As it's title suggests, the plot of this dramma giocoso offers a panoply of absurdist stagecraft with one character being led to believe that the work's heroine is in fact a castrato trying to avoid military service. Full of his trademark buffo humor, melodious and musically buoyant, the opera ran foul of the censors and was swiftly banned, which accounts for it's rarity in performances and recordings. The new edition of the score used in this production corrects numerous previous errors.

I Shardana is set in a free Sardinia, an island where rigorous rules are in force and it's people do not tolerate invasions or spiritual contamination, a time when - as Ennio Porrino (b. 1910) specifies in the score - shepherds were warriors and judges, Inchwhen man did not believe in one God but in the power of the stars, and worshipped the dead and the watersInch. The opera's first drafts date from 1934-35, but the work only debuted years later, on 21st March 1959, at the San Carlo theatre in Naples, with it's final title of I Shardana and Porrino himself conducting. The composer would die suddenly a few months later.
