In the autumn of 1726 Bach embarked on a series of solo and dialogue cantatas for the first time, in which the virtuoso skills of individual soloists were given pride of place rather than a choir. The poet of this impressive series of solo and dialogue cantatas has recently been identified as the Leipzig theology student Christoph Birkmann (1703-1771), later a pastor in Nuremberg. He reported that he Inchdiligently kept company with the great master, Herr Director Bach, and his choir, and also attended the Collegia Musica in the winterInch. Among the 'Ich' cantatas of late autumn and winter 1726/27 are the two works recorded here, which have been regarded ever since as pearls of Bach's oeuvre. - Twenty five years after harmonia mundi issued the solo cantatas for bass with Peter Kooj, Collegium Vocale and Philippe Herreweghe, Matthias Goerne, together with Freiburg Baroque, presents two cantatas intimately linked to the celebration of the Lutheran Reformation, as we celebrate it's 500th anniversary. The recording has had a long period of fruition, what with Schubert, Schumann, Mahler, and soon Wagner, but this new disc should make it's own mark on the discography, just as permanently as it's illustrious predecessor. After releasing all the Brandenburg Concertos and Orchestral Suites, Zefiro joins forces with authoritative singer Dominik Woerner to investigate the intriguing relationship between bass voice and reed instruments in Bach's sacred cantatas. InchJohann Sebastian Bach's son Carl Philipp Emanuel tells us of his father's talent as a singer 'He had a good penetrating voice of wide range and good singing style.' It is therefore not surprising that the three church cantatas for solo bass are among his most exquisite and personal vocal works. Singing voice and instruments enter into a special relationship in these pieces. The dense yet sensitive polyphony is filled with a warmth and tenderness that seems to bring us closer to Bach, who is otherwise so 'hermetically closed'. With a new album given over to three cantatas for bass by JS Bach, Christian Senn gives valid voice to that ever-continuing need of bringing the Kantor's scores alive in fresh recordings. The career of the Chilean- born baritone Senn currently sees him having a strong - and much-applauded - affinity for music of the Baroque, be it in Vivaldi operas, or the Passions and other choral masterpieces by Bach; this is in addition to him impressing greatly in bel canto repertory - notably in Mozart. On this new from Glossa (where Senn is operating with a rich and deep bass-baritone coloring to his voice) there are not just the two principal Bach cantatas for solo bass - Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen, BWV 56 and Ich habe genug, BWV 82 - but also the third and more rarely aired work, Der Friede sei mit dir, BWV 158, in which the soloist is joined by a chorus of sopranos.
