About this product
One of the most important dramas in the German language, Georg Büchner's fragile fragment is based on the case of the soldier J. Ch. Woyzeck, who stabbed his lover to death in 1824. Büchner explores the question of our dependence on social conditions, while also addressing the role of individual freedom and of fatalistic determination in our lives. Rarely has the hopelessness of Büchner's Woyzeck been so movingly portrayed as it is in this production. Ulrich Rasche's sets conjure up a series of breathtaking images, each of them reflecting the situation onstage. This production opens up a direct route to the narrative that is hard to resist. InchBüchner'sInch Woyzeck Inchhas never been seen like this. Gutted and yet filled. Abstract and at the same time of concentrated force. Inch (Neue Zürcher Zeitung)

Based on real events and drawing on Georg Büchner's revolutionary play, Alban Berg's Wozzeck turns a grimly tragic narrative of violence and murder into one of the most powerful and original operas of the 20th century. Berg's uncompromising portrayal of brutality and madness generated much controversy, but the significance of Wozzeck was soon recognised; it's compelling lyrical expansiveness, large-scale dramatic gestures and remarkable musical structures producing music of overwhelming emotional intensity. The Financial Times declared this to be Incha beautiful, moving, engrossing production... this is a consummate Wozzeck, blending clarity, lyricism, compassion and crushing force.Inch
Franz Hawlata, Angela Denoke, Reiner Goldberg, and Vivian Tierney star in this Gran Teatre del Liceu production of the Berg opera conducted by Sebastian Weigle.
The State Opera is the first film ever made about the Bavarian State Opera, one of the world's oldest, most prestigious and internationally esteemed companies. It charts the course of three operas - Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Les Indes galantes and Un ballo in maschera - as they come to life on the stage. We meet some of the great singers, such as Jonas Kaufmann and Anja Harteros, in performance and behind the scenes, as well as artistic directors past and present, and two of the music directors in Kirill Petrenko and his predecessor Zubin Mehta. As both a celebration and an exploration, this entertaining film is a declaration of love for the operatic form.
