Francesco Cavalli was of great importance to the history of 17th century Italian music - his fame established in the then new and swiftly evolving world of opera. Cavalli's sacred music has often been compared to Monteverdi but, drawn from a wonderful anthology published at the apex of his career as a composer, the stylistic and expressive richness documented by the pieces in this program delivers a strong overview of the variety and power of his musical language. The originality in Cavalli's style was in finding an ideal means of expression for the feelings and emotions suggested by the text, breaking down the boundaries between sacred and secular, and creating a more serene merging of artistic and religious sensibilities. Remained manuscript for centuries, the Sonatas offered on this disc, almost all of which are first recordings, are an authentic representation of the multiform musical universe known to Pavona, a world whose sonata taste oscillated between the 'old' Scarlattian model, monothematic and bipartite, dear to the Venetian masters, and the 'new' two-theme sonata-form, already widely in vogue, especially in the Austrian area. Glenn Gould maintained a very peculiar relationship, a sort of love and hate, with Beethoven's music, which he performed out of any traditional scheme or system. This CD presents two further Beethoven rarities in live recordings by the Canadian pianist, the first being the Piano Concerto No.1 in C, op. 15, recorded in Turin, Italy on 23 January 1951 when Gould was only nineteen. The Piano Concerto No.3 in c, op. 37, with the Canadian Radio Orchestra under conductor Heinz Unger, was recorded four years later, on 21 February 1955. This very significant addition to the discography of Glenn Gould furthers the image of this eclectic, fascinating and singular artist. Album Tracks 1.
