good showcase of american destinations
I had rented the movie previously and decided that I would like to own it primarily because I have been to most of the cities showcased in the film. I especially liked the segment of the Nashville Parthenon. Inside the real Nashville Parthenon is a huge, gaudy, almost cartoonish statue of the goddess Athena. I found it interesting that the producers decided to create their own Athena for the film. I guess they found the Nashville Athena as artistically unsettling as I did (ha-ha)!
I never read the books so I don't know how different it is from them. The special features mentioned that the camp was drastically changed as the book concept didn't translate to film well. Beyond that, I know nothing about the books.
I got this as it was in a $4.99 bin and a friend said she loved it. It felt a lot like another version of a Harry Potter type story of alienated kids who discover they have special powers. And having Chris Columbus direct sells that. My final comparison between the two films (this and HP1) is that HP1 looked like it was shot on stage and the effects were inferior, but the story was darker and far more consistent than this film.
Overall this was enjoyable, though the Las Vegas scenes were a bit over the top. CGI characters, if done well, don't phase me, but a random spontaneous yet choreographed dance sequence takes me right out of the film. I'm glad they cut a lot from the Vegas section. Beyond that, it was a fun ride. Bonus points for having a Sean Bean character actually survive.
The special features were decent. Though I found it interesting that they included both the trailer and deleted scenes, including a deleted scene from the diner, but not a scene of some armored car shooting up the parking lot which is seen in the trailer.

Unexpected thrill
Growing up in the 80's, Clash Of The Titans was a fav that was played on a loop when I was a young boy. Always enjoyed the Greek mythology monsters. Percy Jackson brought it to the next generation of fans. CGI has it's limits, but very well put together over all. Uma Thurman as the character she plays (no spoiler from me) was the most fun to watch.
