About this product
Despite it's title, Ratboys' new album Singin' to an Empty Chair is not defined by what's missing. Rather, it's the beginning of an important dialogue with a close loved one, vocalist Julia Steiner finds herself estranged from. The music on the band's sixth studio album - it's first for New West Records - fills the space that person left behind with 11 songs showcasing Ratboys at the peak of their powers - twangy, effervescent, as confident as they've ever been, and perhaps more emotionally interrogative than ever before. The four-piece Chicago band followed up 2023's highly acclaimed The Window by reconvening with co-producer Chris Walla to begin tracking at a rural Wisconsin cabin before taking the songs to Steve Albini's famed Electrical Audio studios in Chicago and later to Rosebud Studio in Evanston, Illinois. The results veer from bubbly power-pop on InchAnywhereInch to irresistible post-country on InchPenny in the Lake,Inch along with heart-piercing ballads like InchJust Want You to Know the TruthInch and an exhilarating detour into the extraterrestrial on InchLight Night Mountains All That,Inch which Steiner dubs the band's mammoth Inchwormhole jam.Inch Singin' to an Empty Chair also marks the first Ratboys album written since Steiner began therapy, which the singer/lyricist credits for the clarity found across the album's unflinching examinations of relationship and self. Fittingly, as the album begins by extending a hand into the void, it concludes with a scene of serenity - all while weaving candid honesty, humor, chaos, and whimsy along the way. InchIt's not all doom and gloom,Inch Steiner says. InchThe experience of making this record definitely gives me hope for whatever happens next.Inch Album Tracks 1. Open Up 2. Know You Then 3. AOID starts with disarming sounds swarming and settling into a prominent, mellifluous vocal track and heartbreakingly tender strumming. Their new album AOID reminds us of classics like Mirah, Okkervil River, Rilo Kiley or Wye Oak meeting somewhere with more contemporary acts like Waxahatchee or even Hop Along at their quieter moments. GN offers a bevy of tales, laments, and triumphs, which recount near-tragedies by the train tracks, crippling episodes of loneliness, remembrances of a deceased family pet with freezer burn, and on and on. The songs shift and breathe as worlds all their own, tied together by the group's self-proclaimed 'post-country' sound, which combines moments of distortion and a DIY aesthetic with a devotion to simple songwriting and ties to the Americana sounds of years past.Alien With A Sleep Mask OnLook ToMy Hands GrowA VisionAnjI Go Out At NightVictorian SlumhouseClever HansListeningPrinter's Devil Album Tracks 1. Upheaval and change are themes spread throughout the songs on Printer's Devil, the latest Ratboys LP, out February 28, 2020 via Topshelf Records. A tangible sonic shift is apparent thanks to a newly-expanded lineup - founding members Julia Steiner and Dave Sagan are now joined by Marcus Nuccio and Sean Neumann on drums and bass. What started as an acoustic duo has finally transformed into a full-scale indie-rock band with a clear identity. Recorded live at Decade Music Studios in Chicago, Printer's Devil features big-chorus power pop songs like 'Alien with a Sleep Mask On' and 'Anj' that sound massive and larger than life, alongside intimate folk songs like 'A Vision' and devastating alt-country tracks like 'Listening, ' showcasing once again the group's signature versatility. Building off their previous albums - AOID (2015) and GN (2017) - Ratboys captures the bombastic, electrified fun of their live show in a bottle on Printer's Devil and showcasesAlien with a Sleep Mask OnLook ToMy Hands GrowA VisionAnjI Go Out at NightVictorian SlumhouseClever HansListeningPrinter's Devil Album Tracks 1.
