Sergio Bosi - Italian Clarinet Gems - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Opera dominated Italian domestic music-making and eclipsed instrumental writing, which often had to draw on operatic models in the shape of virtuosic paraphrases. The renewal of Italian orchestral and chamber music in the twentieth century, however, led to vibrant native schools of composition, not least for the clarinet. Some composers, such as Giuseppe Ruggiero and Nino Rota, acted as bridges between the past and the present, while others invented new 'effects' and sounds, such as those of Bruno Bettinelli in his Studio da concerto. Berio's Lied reworks and simplifies some of the technical innovations to be found in Sequenza IXa, also written for the clarinet (Naxos 8.557661-63). Album Tracks 1. Lied 2. Studio Da Concerto 3. Clarinet Concerto 4. Monodia 5. Fantasia Orientale 6. Andante Lento 7. Andante Calmo 8. Andante Un Poco Mosso 9. Rhapsodie 10. Lo Spiritismo Nella Vecchia Casa 11. Adagio 12. Mosso 13. Considered one of the foremost soloists of his day, Aurelio Magnani was the father of the modern Italian clarinet school. His pupils filled prestigious positions in orchestras worldwide. He was also a composer, having studied in Bologna, and in addition to operas wrote extensively for his own instrument. These fantasies, paraphrases and melodies embrace florid virtuosity and melting lyricism alike, and are inspired and sophisticated works revealing the best in Italian style. Sergio Bosi is Principal Solo Clarinet in the Orchestra Regionale delle Marche and teaches at the G. Rossini Conservatory in Pesaro. As a promoter of Italian repertoire he records for Naxos, Bongiovanni, Arcam Cambridge, Mondomusica EMI, winning critical acclaim and awards. Album Tracks 1. Divertimento Nos. 1 and 2 2. Elegia 3. Romanza E Valzer 4. Melodia Romantica 5. Mazurka-Caprice 6. Solo de Concert

Circumstances including an overwhelming preoccupation with opera at the expense of instrumental music, two world wars and the rise of a Fascist dictatorship, resulted in a generation of Italian chamber music composers born between the 1880s and early 1900s whose music seemed to vanish without a trace. Featured on this , they include virtuoso composer-performers, such as Ferdinando Busoni, father of Ferruccio, renowned pedagogues, and composers persecuted for their Jewish origins. This is Sergio Bosi's fifth album for Naxos in a series devoted to restoring to the repertoire forgotten and rarely-performed Italian clarinet works from the second half of the 19th century to the present day. Album Tracks 1. Fantasia Rapsodica 2. Solo Dramatique, Op. 13 (1879) 3. Andante Con Moto in E minor, Op. 10 (1877) 4.
