Q: Why is the face of "white" sonos5 black.? If I wanted black I would buy the black version
A: This was done just to annoy you and to make sure it doesnt match your asthetic desires. Sonos will make sure and call before their next manufacturing decision and ensure you approve. Maybe put some white tape over your keyboard so you cant put this stuff on the internet.
Q: Subwoofer?
A: I have a pair of the new Play 5's and was considering adding the sub but after doing some manual adjustments and increasing the bass level on the built in EQ I don't believe I need one. For normal music listening they put out more than enough bass. I did speak with Sonos though and they confirmed that when paired with a sub the crossover levels are adjusted on the play 5's taking some pressure off the woofers and allowing them to handle more of the mid bass. I would be curious to hear it but you do not "need" the sub to enjoy great bass.
A: Sonos is a wifi speaker, there are no BT capability. You can use Line in Audio, or add a BT adapter with AUX into Sonos.
Q: 1) Is the mesh on front metal or fabric; 2) is the base adequate, or does one need a sub? Tks
A: It is actually plastic. It used to be metal on the old version but they found that the antenna was had interference in the new design so they changed it to a hard plastic. It feels like metal but it isn't. As far as the base, no sub needed. I think the sub would be great for the playbar or the play 1 or play 3. But the play 5 just doesn't need it in my opinion. It hits hard without it.
Q: Would I have better with 2 play 3 sonos or 1 play 5 sono?
A: Depends. What are you wanting speakers for? If you're wanting surround sound buy 2 Play3s. If you're just looking to put a speaker in a big room the Play5 will do great. Just bought a Play5 for a large room in the house. It's perfect.
Q: whats the difference between the play 3and play 5
A: Both great speakers. The Play 5 has a bit more clarity, bass and is louder. Also, the Play 5 is the only one with the "Line In" feature that allows you to plug another sound source into it like a stereo receiver/cd player/turntable/cell phone/computer. For instance, I have my old school stereo from the 80s plugged into one of my Play 5s and now I can listen to vinyl records all over my house. The Play 5 is the "control unit" for all other Sonos speakers on your system. Not ALL audio sources from the internet are compatible with the Sonos system like "Audible" from Amazon. I listen to books on Audible and I have to plug my cell phone into one of my Play 5 speakers in order to hear my audio books on the Sonos system. Every Sonos speaker will work by itself but you have more flexibility if you have at least one play 5 for that "Line In" feature. It's an investment but worth every penny!
A: Yes. In the settings menu, you can adjust bass and treble, and engage a "loudness" or "bass boost" function.
Q: Does it work on battery power - if so what kind?
A: The speakers are wirelessly connected to computer/phone/tablet, but require a power cord to electric outlet.
