About this product

Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Sonata was extensively revised by the composer in 1931, and the revised version is tighter and thinner in texture than the original version of 1913. It represents a supreme challenge to the pianist in either version, and has all the hallmarks of the composer at the height of his powers. The 6 Moments Musicaux Op.16 are early works which exhibit the flamboyance of the youthful virtuoso. Sonya Bach includes three of the Preludes from the Op.23 set. Album Tracks 1. Rachmaninov Piano Sonata No.2 in B-Flat minor, Op.36 I. Allegro Agitato (Revised 1931 Version) 2. Rachmaninov Piano Sonata No.2 in B-Flat minor, Op.36 II. Non Allegro (Revised 1931 Version) 3. Rachmaninov Piano Sonata No.2 in B-Flat minor, Op.36 III. L'istesso Tempo - Allegro Molto (Revised 1931 Version) 4. Rachmaninov Ten Preludes, Op.23 No.4 in D Major, Andante 5. Rachmaninov Ten Preludes, Op.23 No.5 in G minor, Alla Marcia 6. Rachmaninov Ten Preludes, Op.23 No.6 in E-Flat Major, Andante 7. Rachmaninov Moments Musicaux, Op.16 No.1 in B-Flat minor, Andantino 8. Together with her sister Valérie, singer-actress Nathalie Joly here takes us on a rich musical journey that visits distant shores, from France to Cuba, Mexico, Brazil and Algeria. The songs here, whose rhythms range from samba to rumba via the Arab sounds of Andalusia, are sung in different languages yet deal with the same subjects, particularly our rapports with foreign lands, love and life itself. This album is filled with poetry and saudade, reflecting the universal nature of our musical heritage through the mixed identities of those great seaports that cause our collective consciousness to vibrate. Album Tracks 1. Veinte Años - Vingt Ans 2. Porte de Vincennes 3. Flor de Venganza 4. Samba E Amor-Samba Et Amour 5. Rosa Roja 6. Départ 7. Ime Prezakias-Je Suis Un Junkie 8. Sobre Una Tumba Rumba 9. Con Toda Palabra 10. Llorona 11. Contigo en la Distancia -Avec Toi 12. Lidia 13. Alger Alger 14. Perdon-Pardon 15. Samba Da Utopia-Samba de L'utopie 16. Triste, Muy Triste

The works on this album document the development of Bartok's aesthetics from thenationalistic late romantic style of the symphonic poem InchKossuthInch and the overtly romanticFour Piano Pieces to the folk-infused Sonatina and the ebullient Piano Sonata (there are twosurviving early sonatas) composed in 1926, and which is in his mature style. It exploits theinstruments percussive qualities, and is relentless in it's gladiatorial, muscular energy.Sonya Bach studied with Lazar Bermann and Alicia de Larrocha and has recorded Bachconcertos, Chopin Etudes, Mussorgsky and Rachmaninov for Rubicon.
