Sophia Rahman - Violin Sonatas Nos 1 & 3 / Sonata Melodica - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

In the last of his three volume series devoted to Granados's orchestral music, two very different compositional strands are explored. The early Suite oriental reveals his sense of vivid orchestral color and melodic imagination, couched in the exotic language of the time. Written in a more pared-down style, the one-act Inchlyric poemInch Liliana, a collaboration with the writer Apelles Mestres, is a four-movement suite in which Granados conjures up a vivid, mythical world. Elisenda is another impressionistic score, both emotive and ethereal, here performed in it's arrangement for piano and chamber orchestra. Album Tracks 1. Preludio y Salutación Al Sol 2. Liliana y los Gnomos 3. Canto de Las Ranas 4. Coro de Sifos y Farándula 5. Ante El Desierto 6. Serenata 7. Marcha Oriental 8. Dos Danzas 9. El Jardin de Elisenda - Dani Espana/Barcelona Symphony Orchestra 10. Trova - Dani Espana/Barcelona Symphony Orchestra 11. Elisenda - Dani Espana/Barcelona Symphony Orchestra

Heino Eller (1887-1970) is the founding father of Estonian professional instrumental music, both as a masterful and original composer, and as a teacher of composition over half a century. His output of around 300 titles is almost exclusively dedicated to instrumental music. Though Eller wrote three symphonies, around a dozen symphonic poems, six string quartets and four piano sonatas, he is nevertheless essentially a master of the small form. Eller's music is characterised by a bright pantheistic lyricism and a Nordic restraint in expression, whilst retaining a philosophically charged, at times epic undercurrent. This magnificent album is the first ever devoted to Eller's music for violin, about half of which is represented here ? including the demanding second of his two sonatas for violin and piano, the remarkable, hyper-expressionist Fantasy for solo violin, and the most popular, emblematic work in Estonian repertoire for the instrument, Pines. Album Tracks 1. Violin Sonata No. 2 2. Fantasy for Solo Violin 3. Valse Mélancolique 4. Allegretto 5. Dance 6. Moment Musical 7. Adagio 8. Lyrical Song 9. In Moonlight 10. Fantasy 11. Canzonetta 12.
