Soul Jazz Records Presents - In The Beginning There Was Rhythm - VINYL LP

Vinyl LP pressing. Includes digital download. First released in 2001, this album is fully remastered, remade and presented once more in it's entirety and features A Certain Ratio, Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle, The Human League, The Pop Group, Gang of Four, The Slits, 23 Skidoo and This Heat. // As Muzik magazine noted on it's initial , 'In The Beginning' is a choice selection from the fertile post-punk period when bands thought nothing of combining politics and philosophy with imported dance rhythms and edgy industrial angst. The bands featured come (mostly) from the then bleak post-industrial North of England - Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds as well as Bristol and London, and yet all show a fascination with black American rhythms and an experimentation in sound that was completely unique at the time. The title of the album comes from The Slits track of the same name. This double vinyl edition with download code comes complete with two bespoke inner bags containing extensive sleevenotes and original photography. Album Tracks 1. Shack Up 2. Coup 3. To Hell with Poverty 4. Being Boiled 5. In the Beginning There Was Rhythm [Early Version] 6. 24 Track Loop 1. 20 Jazz Funk Greats 2. She Is Beyond Good and Evil 3. Sluggin' Fer Jesus 4. Vegas El Bandito 5. Knife Slits Water

Soul Jazz Records Presents - Studio One Rocksteady 2 - VINYL LP

Soul Jazz Records' new journey into the mighty vaults of Clement Dodd's Studio One steps once more into the fertile musical environment of Jamaican music in the late 1960s and early 1970s, from the sweet harmony vocals of seminal 1960s Rocksteady right up to the nascent birth of Reggae and Roots music at the start of the 1970s. - While Ska at the start of the 1960s had taken American rhythm and blues as it's main influence, Rocksteady focused on the emergence of American Soul music - with Jamaican vocal harmony groups such as The Gaylads, John Holt & The Paragons, Carlton & The Shoes showing a particular fascination with the close harmonies of Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions and other US soul acts. Here The Heptones even feature with a cover of Bob Dylan's 'I Shall Be Released'. - The influence of Soul music on Jamaican rock steady and reggae is almost palpable, so much so that one wonders how much more successful singers like Delroy Wilson, Alton Ellis, Slim Smith and John Holt would have been had they been born in Chicago, Detroit or Memphis. Artists such as Alton Ellis, Delroy Wilson and Owen Gray defined the era - a slowed down beat as Jamaican political and social heat slowly increased as the 1960s progressed into the start of the 1970s - and the music evolved further from rock steady into roots reggae. Album Tracks 1. Hortense Ellis - Sitting in the Park 2. The Termites - Rub Up Push Up 3. Carlton and the Shoes - Never Let Go 4. Alton Ellis - I'm Still in Love with You 5. Owen Gray - Give Me a Little Sign 6. The Bassies - Big Mistake 7. Hortense and Alton Ellis - Breaking Up Is Hard to Do 8. Slim Smith - Born to Love 9. Cannon and the Soul Vendors - Bad Treatment 10. John Holt - Strange Things 11. The Actions - Giddy Up 12. Larry Marshall - It Makes Me Feel 13. The Paragons - Change Your Style 14. Jerry Jones - Trying Times 1

Soul Jazz Records Presents - Holy Church Of The Ecstatic Soul - A Higher Power: Gospel Funk & Soul - VINYL LP

Soul Jazz Records' Holy Church of the Ecstatic Soul Gospel, Funk and Soul at the Crossroads 1971-83 draws upon the extensive links between black American gospel music and soul music, showing how the sensibilities of gospel artists such as Shirley Caeser, Dorothy Norwood, Andrae Crouch and others crossed over into secular soul music during this period. // The album was first available as a (sold out) ltd. Edn. coloured vinyl for RSD23 and is now available as a black double vinyl + download edition. // Many of the most successful soul artists - from Aretha Franklin to Al Green, The Staple Singers to Sam Cooke - all drew upon their upbringing in the church for their musical inspiration. This album discusses how important the links between the black church and soul music were in creating soul music and spotlights some of the many important (and also little-known) gospel artists who walked this line between sacred music and soul, funk and disco in the 1970s and early 1980s. // Holy Church of the Ecstatic Soul shows how sacred gospel music was at home with Stevie Wonder, Blaxploitation-style funk and produced music celebrated both in New York's underground discos (The Paradise Garage, Studio 54, etc) and later sampled by the likes of Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg and Mary J Bilge. Album Tracks 1. Andraé Crouch & the Disciples - Satisfied 2. Shirley Caesar - Jesus Children of America 3. The Meditation Singers - Trouble's Brewin' 1. The Clark Sisters - You Brought the Sunshine 2. Dorothy Norwood - Let Your Feet Down Easy 3. Shirley Caesar - Jesus Is Coming 4. Swan Silvertones - If You Believe Your God Is Dead 1. The Alvin Darling Ensemble - Is There Anybody Here? 2. Roscoe Robinson - There's a Creator 3. Destiny - Nothing Can Stop Me Now 4. The Meditation Singers - Good Old Gospel Music 5. Keith Barrow - Everything Is Gonna Be Alright 1. Roscoe Robinson
