'Try Counting Sheep' was always a bit of a curio. For reasons best left in the dark, distant days of record tag meetings of the early 1990s, it only ever saw a UK and Europe , our US cousins having to do without it. A strange decision because, while it doesn't have the head-nod hummability of 'The Choice is Yours', the group's biggest hit, it perfectly captures their ramshackle charm coupled with a catchy hook.While Dres was a characterful and idiosyncratic MC, one thing that often goes uncelebrated about Black Sheep was their production nous. As on their other singles, they mine some familiar tracks but use the samples in original and creative ways. The Original Sheep LP Mix is a likeably meandering track that borrows bass from Jimi Hendrix and different bits of Rare Earth's '(I Know) I'm Losing You', with a real lightness of touch.As this was a UK - the original 7Inch of which now fetches around three figures - the tag drafted in UK producer The Principle for a remix. Best known for his work with Profile Records crew Caveman, he brings the same kind of propulsive organ track to the remix that underpins much of their best work. He adds in an instantly familiar drum break from 'Impeach the President' to drive a fine re-imagining that is very much of it's time.It's a record that can still summon the fun of a hip-hop club in 1991, and one that's no longer impossible to find on 7Inch. Official Mr Bongo Hip Hop Reissue. While the powerhouses of the loose Native Tongue collective were undoubtedly de la Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and the Jungle Brothers, the wider family threw up some intriguing groups and unforgettable records. Black Sheep - the duo of Dres and Mr Lawnge - were a natural fit for the Native Tongue vibe, displaying the same kind of wit and humour as their counterparts, with an off-kilter approach that helped them stand out. While they only released one truly amazing album - their debut 'A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing' was a standout in 1991, one of hip-hop's best years for LP's - it spawned five unique singles, with this the first one that really garnered any attention. While it wasn't a smash hit outside of hip-hop circles, it showcased their approach perfectly - sinuous rhymes, clever wordplay and a hint of flirtation. If the drums sound familiar, it's because it's the same Joe Farrell break - the intro to 1974's 'Upon This Rock' - that Kanye West later used for 'Gone'. Add in some horns from Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass and you've got a funky little earworm. They return to the same Joe Farrell well for the flip, 'Butt... In the Meantime', because if the break isn't broke, don't fix it. Black Milk, one of the most prodigious and versatile talents in the world of hip-hop, returns alongside his band Nat Turner with a live instrumental LP, The Rebellion Sessions, a jazz-funk opus recorded over the span of one week. Orchestrated and produced by Black Milk, The Rebellion Sessions features Nat Turner (Aaron InchAbInch Abernathy on keys, Malik Hunter on bass, and Zebulun InchZInch Horton on drums). Although the guys have appeared on Black's previous works, The Rebellion Sessions is the first project created by the four as a collaborative unit. The album, at times recalling the works of Fela Kuti, Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, Sly & The Family Stone, D'Angelo, and Robert Glasper, builds off Black Milk and Nat Turner's incredible live show, honed over the course of years and more than 90 shows played worldwide in 2015 alone. Black Milk & Nat Turner will embark on The Rebellion Tour in Europe this May, performing select tunes from The Rebellion Sessions in addition to songs from Black Milk's extensive catalog, before hitting the road in the States.
