About this product
Ira and Charlie Louvin (they were cousins of country singer/songwriter John D. Loudermilk) were a powerful and distinctive force in country music through the '50s until their break-up in 1963, their music firmly rooted in their Southern Baptist upbringing, although they achieved huge success as long-time Grand Ole Opry members and with secular hits like InchCash On The BarrelheadInch, InchWhen I Stop DreamingInch, InchRunning WildInch and the No. 1 InchI Don't Believe You've Met My BabyInch. With Ira's trademark mandolin and their extraordinary blend of voices, they were among the genre's most individual stylists, and influenced many later artists, such as The Everly Brothers, whose vocal harmonies very much echo those of The Louvin Brothers, and others including Gram Parsons and The Byrds - The Byrds recorded the Louvins' InchThe Christian LifeInch. This collection captures the flavour and progression of their music from their recording debut through to their break-up in 1963, occasioned by Ira's heavy drinking and violently unpredictable behaviour, which belied his deep religious convictions. It comprises their most successful singles, with a dozen country hits, plus material drawn from their other A & B sides and from their themed concept albums for Capitol. Album Tracks 1. Alabama (The Louvin Brothers) 2. They've Got the Church Out Numbered (The Louvin Brothers) 3. The Weapon of Prayer (The Louvin Brothers) 4. You'll Be Rewarded Over There (The Louvin Brothers) 5. Charlie and Ira Louvin were possibly one of the most distinctive and important close harmony duos in post-war country music. Based around Ira's trademark mandolin, and with the almost alchemic blend of their voices, on the face of it completely different, but mystically becoming interchangeable as they felt their way through a song. They provided inspiration to artists who themselves became iconic exponents of pop and rock vocal harmony, like The Everly Brothers and The Byrds. Beginning as a country gospel duo during the '40s, their career was interrupted by service in WWII and the Korean War until they joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1955. They were told by the Opry to move away from their gospel roots. As a tobacco sponsor put it InchYou can't sell tobacco with gospel musicInch It was this shift towards secular material which brought them their breakthrough successes. This 16-track LP draws from their output over an 8-year period. It includes all their US country chart entries and more, providing an entertaining showcase for the boys' talents. The collection gives a great overview of the most successful phase of their career. Album Tracks 1. When I Stop Dreaming 2. I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby 3. Hoping That You're Hoping 4. Cash on the Barrelhead 5. You're Running Wild 6. Don't Laugh 7. Plenty of Everything But You 8. My Baby's Gone 9. If I Could Only Win Your Love 10. Knoxville Girl 11. While You're Cheating on Me 12. Geese return with their 3rd album, 'Getting Killed'. They tracked the album with Kenneth Blume in 10 fast-paced days. With scant time for overdubbing, what emerged is a chaotic comedy, shambolic in structure but passionately performed, informed by an exacting vision. Big riffs are layered on choir samples; hissing drum machines pulse softly behind screeching guitars. They balance a disarming tenderness with an intensified anger, trading their love of classic rock for a disdain for music itself. Album Tracks 1. Trinidad (03 44) 2. Cobra (03 05) 3. Husbands (04 08) 4. Getting Killed (04 44) 5. Islands of Men (05 54) 6. 100 Horses (03 46) 7. Half Real (03 22) 8. Au Pays Du Cocaine (03 30) 9. Bow Down (03 28) 10. Taxes (03 17) 11. The Wilburn Brothers were a popular and successful country duo whose chart career spanned fifteen years, during which they had more than fifteen hits in the Billboard country charts. Hailing from Arkansas they had a high profile as child performers, appearing as The Wilburn Children on The Grand Ole Opry when they were about ten years old. They were regulars on The Louisiana Hayride before being drafted to serve in the Korean War, after which they returned to music and toured with Faron Young and Webb Pierce until signing to Decca in 1954. This great-value 59-track 2-CD set comprises most of their A & B sides for Decca during this era, plus selected titles from their albums InchTeddy And DoyleInch, InchSide By SideInch, InchLivin' In God's CountryInch, InchThe Big HeartbreakInch, InchSingInch & InchCity LimitsInch.
