The Messenger has a lot going for it. It’s a 2D action platformer with a gorgeous aesthetic that seamlessly goes from 8 to 16-bit, it has a hilarious sense of humor, clever dialogue, and one of the absolute best retro-themed “chiptune” soundtracks out there. There was even a period of time while playing The Messenger, once I unlocked its full suite of core abilities, when I felt this might be one of the best games I’ve played all year.

One of if not the best modern 8-bit Ninja Gaiden homage. A bit short from start to finish, but it definitely scratches that 2D retro pixel gaming ninja action itch. Precise controls, satisfying gameplay, more than enough challenge, and topped off with classic original 8-bit tunes that match the overall theme. An overwhelming must have if you like these kinds of games. I’ve been wanting to get my hands on this game since the original release years ago. Glad I this re-release happened and thank my local Best Buy store for having it in stock, since no other retailer did unless you preordered it.

Absolutely Addictive classic ninja SNES stylized gameplay. Started game up & played straight through to the ending credits in a few days. Highly recommended. This is a special title and I'm so grateful Best Buy is selling another print of this highly sought after title.

Fantastic game and one of the best retro-inspired titles I’ve played. I found the music, visual style, pacing, and humor to all be top-notch. However, the best part of this game for me was the control scheme; your Messenger handles like high-performance machine. Once the entire moveset is obtained, the bulk of the game will enable (and require) you to perform really cool feats of dexterity through a daunting array of traps, deadly environments, and monsters. You will die a lot, but I almost always had the feeling that the death was deserved since I knew what I needed to do and had the tools to do it. The penalties for death are minimal, so your time is mostly spent learning a deathtrap or boss until you triumph, rather than repeating long segments or running out of lives and restarting. I was never bored and looked forward to each new ability, environment, clever joke, or entertaining boss fight.

Absolutely great game. Modern in play style, but the visuals are from the past. It is in HD, and I love the switch between 'worlds'. Fantastic story and just a great game. Highly reccomend to all!

Very good game. I do see this game takes inspiration from the NES Ninja Gaiden. If you like NES games, then The Messenger is for you :-)

Glad to finally get this game physically though I do also own it digitally. A no brainer to get this game at such a great price and one gamers should jump on before it's too late and the scalpers claim them. The game plays great as it's a real love letter to the 8/16-bit games of yesteryear and done in an loving way for gamers who remember playing these games on the so called retro consoles. Either way a game that should not be passed over easily and a must have for any Switch owner to add to their game collection.

This Messenger is an awesome blend of 8 bit and 16 bit goodness, it leads you towards a path that no other game brings that I could really think of, the amazing soundtrack to hear is a good time and pleasing to the ears, it had been a while since I've enjoyed a metroidvania this much!

Tight controls , satisfying story , action humor, tons of platforming. Best played on pro controller to avoid hand fatigue. Visual art style very retro. Great to play with a friend to help take turns while playing

Waited to play this game until I could grab a physical copy. Worth the wait, such a great game. Plays great with the Super Nintendo controller that Nintendo offers.

I bought the game digitally around the time it first came out and really liked it. So, when I saw that there was a physical copy of it with the DLC as well I had to give it for my collection. Hope they make a sequel for it!
