About this product

Crooner Tony Martin was one of the coterie of male vocalist like Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Tony Bennett, Frankie Laine, Al Martino and others who dominated the pop charts during the post-war decade (although, unlike those mentioned, he was not of Italian descent). He started his professional career as a Hollywood bit-part actor in movies like InchFollow The FleetInch in 1936, before becoming a big-band singer, having his first hits, including several with the Ray Noble Orchestra, in the late 30s and early 40s, before a break while he served in WWII, then joined the Mercury tag in 1946. He became a regular hit-maker right through until his music was overtaken by the rock 'n' roll and teen pop explosion of the late'50s. The consistency of his success can be measured by the fact that this excellent value 50-track 2-CD set consists entirely of hits which he had in the Billboard and Cashbox charts - for reasons of space we could not include them all, but there are only a few which had to be omitted, so this represents a pretty thorough trawl across his most successful recordings. It naturally includes what are probably his best-known hits - InchStranger In ParadiseInch and InchWalk Hand In HandInch, along with other Top 5 biggies like InchTonight We LoveInch, InchTo Each His OwnInch InchThere's No TomorrowInch, InchI Get IdeasInch and InchHereInch. He was very much a star who encapsulated the musical zeitgeist of his time, and this will be a must for lovers of '40s and '50s nostalgia Album Tracks 1. When Did You Leave Heaven' 2. The Moon of Manakoora (Tony Martin with Ray Noble's Orch.) - Tony Martin/Ray Noble's Orchestra 3. I Hadn't Anyone Till You (Tony Martin with Ray Noble's Orch.) - Tony Martin/Ray Noble's Orchestra 4. Tony Pastor & His Orchestra - Collection 1940-51 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Tony Pastor was a jazz and big band saxophonist, singer and bandleader who was with Artie Shaw's orchestra during the '30s before launching his own band in 1940, subsequently enjoying a highly successful chart career through the 1940s with a distinctive style of upbeat and entertaining middle-of-the-road music, including the novelty-flavoured material popular in that era. In the later years of the decade, he provided an early career opportunity for Rosemary Clooney and her sister Betty, who recorded with Pastor through 1948-49, and who are featured on a dozen or more titles here. This 72-track 3-CD set comprises selected A and B sides from his singles on the Bluebird, RCA-Victor, Cosmo and Columbia labels during this era, and features all his fifteen US chart entries, including the Top 10 hits InchMaria ElenaInch, InchDance With A DollyInch, InchBell Bottom TrousersInch, Sioux City SueInch, InchRed Silk Stockings And Green PerfumeInch and InchThe Lady From Twenty-Nine PalmsInch. It features at least one side of a significant proportion of his releases during these years. Along with Tony Pastor himself and The Clooney Sisters, featured vocalists include Johnny McAfee, Eugenie Baird, Dorsey Anderson, Kay Little, Elisse Cooper, Kay Foster, Rita McCullough and Virginia Maxey. It's a substantial and enjoyable showcase for the music of an artist who is not much talked about these days but who made a significant contribution to the popular music of this primary decade and more of his career. Album Tracks 1. Dance with a Dolly (With a Hole in Her Stocking) 2. The Rhymin' Game (Rhyme Your Name) 3. It Never Entered My Mind 4. I Want to Live (As Long As You Love Me) 5. Let's Do It (Let's Fall in Love) 6. I've Got You Under My Skin 7. Love of My Life 8. You're the One for Me 9. Paradiddle Joe 10. With a Twist of the Wrist 11. Pale Moon 12. For Whom the

Harry James - Hits Collection 1938-53 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Trumpeter and bandleader Harry James was one of the most important, successful and influential personalities of the swing and big band era, his unmistakeable bravura trumpet style providing an inspiration and benchmark for trumpeters across the jazz and orchestral genres. He was hugely popular on radio, as a 'live' attraction and on record with his music not only appealing to cutting edge jazz and big band enthusiasts, but also, through his recordings of InchsweeterInch orchestral material, featuring the many male and female vocalists who launched their careers with his bands, capturing a wider audience to achieve a remarkable string of big-selling hits from his debut as a bandleader in the late '30s right through into the 1950's just before the dawn of the rock 'n' roll era. This great-value 71-track 3-CD set comprises just about all his records which featured in one form or another of the charts during his career, including the few that were listed as being Top 10 hits before the launch of the record sales charts in Billboard in 1940, and those which featured thereafter in one or other of the published Billboard charts or related listings. It naturally includes his No. 1 hits InchSleepy LagoonInch, InchI Had The Craziest DreamInch, InchI've Heard That Song BeforeInch, InchI'll Get ByInch, InchI'm Beginning to See the LightInch and InchIt's Been a Long, Long TimeInch. Among the featured vocalists are Frank Sinatra, Dick Haymes, Helen Forrest, Kitty Kallen, Johnny McAfee, Buddy DeVito, Betty Grable, Willie Smith, Ginnie Powell, Marion Morgan, Art Lund and Dick Williams, and it also includes Harry's 1950s hits with Doris Day and Rosemary Clooney.
