Avant-guarding Mompou - a kaleidoscope of contemporary music. Influenced by the French Impressionists, Mompou's Cançons i Danses are juxtaposed in the present recording by commissions from nine other composers, four of them Spanish, one Greek, one Czech, one French, one English and one German. This compilation of works reveals some surprising cross-references and at the same time helps to explain our idiosyncratic title 'Making Mompou our contemporary'. One of the leading lights among the new generation of Spanish pianists, Maria Canyigueral has inspired collaborations with outstanding contemporary Spanish composers such as Antón García Abril, Benet Casablancas, Joan Magrané Figuera, Josep Maria Guix and others. Her partnership with Antón García Abril has been particularly successful, attracting high praise from critics and audiences both in Spain and the UK. Antón García Abril has written Reverberaciones for Maria Canyigueral's 'Avant-guarding Mompou' project and Hoy es siempre todavía for her Horn trio. 2014 two CD collection, a comprehensive overview of THE AMERICAN AVANT-GARDE IN THE 20th CENTURY. Commencing with early pioneers Charles Ives and George Antheil (including the celebrated, Futuristic Ballet Mechanique of 1924), this chronological collection also includes pieces by emigre arrivals in the New World such as Leo Ornstein, Dane Rudhyar and Edgard Varese, as well homegrown composers including Henry Cowell, Carl Ruggles and Roger Sessions. The second half of the disc offers works by a number of even more modern modernists, notably Morton Feldman, Harry Partch and the immortal John Cage, whose groundbreaking Sonatas and Interludes for prepared piano is presented in it's entirety. Until well into the second half of the eighteenth century it was the harpsichord which served at the very forefront as a sounding body for experimental and avant-garde. At the latest with the generation around Beethoven, the InchmodernInch fortepiano had become the key instrument for this task. With the renaissance of the harpsichord toward the end of the 19th century, the interest of living composers in this instrument gradually awoke. A first peak was reached in the 1920s, when Manuel de Falla and Francis Poulenc created the first significant works with their respective concert pieces. Fortunately, music continues to be diligently composed for this IncholdInch instrument. The performance of a recital on this in 2004 is intended to document the liveliness and timeliness of new harpsichord music, even if the most recent piece from 1999 was written at that time.
