About this product
Volume One. EU-only two CD set that chronicles the birth of Country Rock. In 1966, rock groups began turning away from the self-indulgence of early psychedelia to the timeless values embodied in country music, but they brought a counter-culture sensibility to it. It was a trend that began slowly in 1966, picked up steam in '67 when Bob Dylan released his groundbreaking John Wesley Harding album and the Band's first LP appeared, and became a phenomenon in 1968 when the Byrds released Sweetheart of the Rodeo, and Dillard & Clark's first album appeared. Heritage acts like the Everly Brothers and Rick Nelson came early to the party. And then, in 1969, the Flying Burrito Brothers' first LP appeared, Dylan released 'Nashville Skyline,' and the Band's epochal second LP appeared. Suddenly, Country Rock was a phrase on everyone's lips. Album Tracks 1. Truck Driving Man - International Submarine Band 2. You Just Can't Quit - Nelson, Rick 3. Nashville Cats - Lovin' Spoonful, the 4. Pay the Price - Buffalo Springfield 5. Tried So Hard - Clark, Gene & the Gosdin Brothers 6. Grizzely Bear Aka Grizzly Bear - Youngbloods, the 7. ![Various Artists - The Greatest Country Hits Of 1950 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]](https://pisces.bbystatic.com/image2/BestBuy_US/images/products/168f8065-f17d-4be8-891f-d9819a14b108.jpg;maxHeight=422;maxWidth=264?format=webp)
This continues the series which we re-established a couple of years ago and which comprises selected annual collections of the biggest US country hits of each year. This great value100-track 4-CD collection goes back to the start of the 1950s, when the relevant Billboard chart was called the Best Selling Retail Folk (Country & Western) Records, and apart from a few weeks at the start of the year, when there was a Top 15, was restricted to a published Top 10. The collection comprises many of the records which appeared in the chart during the year. Although there were many records which harked back to the styles of traditional hillbilly and western swing music, many of the artists featured were those who had established themselves during the late 1940s and would enjoy prolific hit-making careers during the '50s until the business changed significantly in the wake of the rock 'n' roll explosion. Artists like Hank Williams, Eddy Arnold, Red Foley, Ernest Tubb and Tennessee Ernie Ford are therefore well represented along with many artists whose musical legacy is less well-known these days, as well as pop artists like Margaret Whiting and Kay Starr making forays into the genre through duets with country stars, which makes it a fascinating snapshot of the business as a new decade dawned. With an in-depth 10,000+ word booklet with background notes on every record, it gives a solid overview of the most popular country music of the year. Album Tracks 1. Margaret Whiting & Jimmy Wakely - Slipping Around 2. Mule Train (Tennessee Ernie Ford); 3. Anticipation Blues (Tennessee Ernie Ford); 4. C - H 5. I'll Never Slip Around Again (Margaret Whiting & Jimmy Wakely); 6. Hank Williams - My Bucket's Got a Hole in It 7. Eddy Arnold - Will Santa Come to Shanty Town 8. Ernest Tubb - White Christmas 9. Gene Autry - Here Comes Santa Claus 10. Hank Williams -

From the people who brought you 'Hillbillies In Hell'... Blood, Sweat and Tears. 32 timeless tales of clanging Hammers and pounding Shovels - from wry, dry working-stiff diatribes to bare-chested exclamations - Birth / Work / Death maps the human work experience from anger to joy, poverty to riches. From the muck-crusted mines to late-night jukeboxes - backwoods outsiders and Nashville icons alike waxed odes to the entwined necessities of Work and Money, Status and Competition, Survival and Servitude. Harrowing laments of dank deaths underground, fevered hymns to Mammon, snide ripostes to debt-bondage and exuberant celebrations of family and sustenance. Most originally waxed on private press labels and distributed in tiny amounts, these town criers and tavern-bound troubadours sing of golden highways, slothful byways, factory-floor drudgery and fallow, heartbreaking fields. Years in the making - 'Birth / Work / Death' presents calloused anthems and bloody ballads from dusty LPs and long forgotten 45s. All for your lunch-hour listening pleasure. Album Tracks 1. Bill Carter - By the Sweat of My Brow 2. Bobby Barnett - Workin' Man 3. Tex Ritter - the Workingman's Prayer 4. Mr. Connie Dycus - Dark As a Dungeon 5. Dave Dudley - Workin' Hands 6. Eddie Noack - Cotton Mill 7. The Westport Kids - You Kain't Take It with You 8. Arlie Duff - Money Hungry 9. Tex Williams - Money 10. Tennessee Ernie Ford - Sixteen Tons '65 11.
