After award-winning Langgaard recordings, the Nightingale String Quartet turns to one of the great unsung quartet cycles of the last century, that of Vagn Holmboe (1909-1996). Volume 1 in this new cycle takes in the composer's first published quartet, his momentum-fuelled Quartet No. 3 and his taut Quartet No. 15 with it's pathos-imbued funeral march. These are fresh new performances that support the idea that the deeper you dig into Holmboe's music, the more you find. Nightingale String Quartet was formed in 2007 and consists of Gunvor Sihm and Josefine Dalsgaard, violins, Marie Louise Broholt Jensen, viola, and Louisa Schwab, cello. All four are students in the soloist course at the academies in Copenhagen and Aarhus with Professor Tim Frederiksen as mentor and chamber music teacher. Since September 2012 the quartet has also studied regularly with Professor Hatto Beyerle, founder of the Alban Berg Quartet and ECMA (European Chamber Music Academy). Album Tracks 1. Memorias is clair-obscur's birthday present for Astor Piazzolla, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday in 2021. This album provides the listener with comprehensive insights into Piazzolla's musical environment. A novel, unexpected musical context allows us to hear Piazzolla's music in a different way, with a fresh approach. It is obvious why the four musicians from Berlin are called Inchclair-obscurInch. Clair-obscur, a painting technique from the Renaissance, in which opposing light and dark tones are used to symbolize heavenly and earthly elements, is the visual equivalent of the sounds the quartet draw from their instruments on the one hand, warm, intense and clear, and on the other harsh, aggressive and robust. These two poles can also be found in the composition of the quartet two female and 2 male musicians in one ensemble create a unique musical energy. Album Tracks 1.
