A voice as an instrument. Hard To Be A God is the new mini-album by Whitney K and follows 2021's acclaimed 'Two Years'. Now based in Montreal, once again Konner Whitney is accompanied by friend, musician and all-hands-on-deck collaborator Joshua Boguski and by multi-instrumentalist Avalon Tassonyi. From the opening notes of 'While Digging Through The Snow' it's apparent that something magical is happening, like witnessing a Inchstate of graceInch, a breathtaking delivery where the game has slowed down and the band is dazzled while proceeding in trance through the experience. This is 'a moment', a future staple, a daydreamer ballad where reassessing one's life stock and it's surroundings gently evolves into a wider narrative, one where you are left contemplating colonial legacy and it's inevitable conclusion. 'Not Unlike A Rock' is a rollicking bongo cruiser plateauing with mixolydian guitar licks that would make deadheads realign; the cartwheeling percussion on 'Two Strangers' nervously advances carrying Queen Victoria on her drive, another abstract metaphor for colonialism in Canada. 'Hard To Be A God'... well, it does take a while for a lesson to sink in. 'Song For A Friend' is the epic closer, a stunning majestic beautifully orchestrated song about losing that someone to another more desirable city... or is it about the feeling of being left behind? Equal parts blue-eyed soul shouter and wild-eyed poet-sorcerer, Van Morrison is among popular music's true innovators, a restless seeker whose incantatory vocals and alchemical fusion of R&B, jazz, blues, and Celtic folk produced what is regarded as perhaps the most spiritually transcendent body of work in the rock 'n' roll canon.Hailed by critics as one of the greatest albums of all time, Morrison's Moondance was an immediate and commercial success after the Northern Irish singer-songwriter released it on Feb. 27, 1970. After the commercial failure of his first Warner Bros. Album Astral Weeks (1968), Morrison moved to upstate New York with his wife and began writing songs for Moondance. There, he met the musicians that would record the album with him at New York City's A & R Studios in August and September 1969.The album found Morrison abandoning the abstract folk jazz compositions of Astral Weeks in favor of more formally composed songs, which he wrote and produced entirely himself. It's lively rhythm and blues/rock music was the style he would become most known for in his career. The music incorporated soul, jazz, pop, and Irish folk sounds into songs about finding spiritual renewal and redemption in worldly matters such as nature, music, romantic love, and self-affirmation.Moondance helped establish Morrison as a major pop music artist while several songs from the album, including the title track, became staples of FM radio in the early 1970s. Avalon is inspired by an ancient Celtic myth of an island in dense fog where the Holy Grail is said to be located, King Arthur is buried and where Excalibur is hidden. I use it as a metaphor for the present time in which we live in which it is not clear to anyone what the world will look like after the pandemic. The single Avalon is a dreamy piece of music that is also used for the exhibition in de Fundatie that will run until the spring of 2021.
