About this product

In a word I feel myself the most unhappy and wretched creature in the world. Imagine a man whose health will never be right again, and who in sheer despair over this ever makes things worse and worse instead of better... but I have tried my hand at several instrumental things... in fact, I intend to pave the way towards a grand symphony in this manner. These extracts from a letter of 1824 epitomize to me the paradox of Schubert, the manic-depressive composer. On the one hand his music has that world-weary element of profound grief - 'the most wretched creature in the world' - and on the other a life-affirming exuberance bordering on the manic that characterizes the Wanderer-Fantasie and parts of the D major sonata D.850. Here, Llyr Williams plays a collection of Schubert solo piano works across a series of releases, once again showing why he is one of the most diverse and extraordinary pianists performing today. Album Tracks 1. Sonata in C minor, D. 958 2. Sonata in D Major, Op. 53 D. 850

Williams - Volume 1 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Llyr Williams begins a new cycle of live concert recordings with Signum, following his acclaimed Beethoven cycle. Schubert's solo piano works chart the development of a composer whose later works, in Llyr Williams words, Inchcover a range of emotions to rival Beethoven's last sonatasInch. Beginning near the end, the first album opens with the Sonata No. 20 in A Major and Sechs Moments Musicaux - both published in1828 only a few months before his death. The encore comes from his 3rd Klavierstucke D. 946, popularized by Brahms 40 years later in 1868. Album Tracks 1. Sonata in a Major, D. 959 2. Sechs Moments Musicaux, Op. 94, D. 780 3. Drei Klavierstücke, D. 946 No. 3 in C Major
