Synopsis

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2
In this sequel to the 2002 sleeper hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Toula (Nia Vardalos) finds her extended family rocked by the revelation that her mother and father were never really married -- which, of course, requires an even bigger Greek wedding so they can officially tie the knot. Meanwhile, Toula struggles to spice up her marriage to Ian (John Corbett), and is heartbroken when her daughter Paris (Elena Kampouris) says she wants to go to a distant college in order to get away from her overbearing clan. ~ Jack Rodgers, Rovi

Lighthearted, earnest sequel. But no Wedding 1.

I really wanted to like this movie more than I do, although it's not bad. I would give it 3.5 stars, but I don't want to go all the way down to 3, mostly out of nostalgia. The original is one of my favorite movies of all time. As someone who immigrated to the US at a young age, I can relate to the incredible honesty and even courage of the original to reveal great truths in its candid and hilarious depiction of life in a big immigrant family. I have frequently told people who have seen that movie, "That's pretty much my life". Where the original's humor, charm, and wit came from revealing great and simple truths, even painful ones, about the immigrant family experience, the sequel creates contrived and unrealistic situations which draw little humor. Gone is the delightful revelation and relation of the first, and instead we have a sort of forced and uninspired retread. There's not one point where I would go "That's so True!" like I did with the original. The blu-ray has two short bonus features (about 15 minutes each) involving interviews with the cast. There's really not much real "making of" content. I really wish this had included a commentary like the first did, which was where the really informative and entertaining making of content was found. However, the real fun of the sequel, and perhaps all it was meant to be, is a reunion of the wonderful cast, and a warm and welcoming atmosphere which is reminiscent of the first. There are enough funny moments to recommend at least one viewing.

My family and I absolutely love the first one. Seen it maybe 8+ times and still cracks me up. That said, after watching the 2nd one, we all thought is was a major let down. The humor was pushed and not natural. Used the grandmother way too much, and each time it wasn't funny, but was ridiculous. And this will be weird saying, but everything was too "Greek". Yes, we understand that the family is 100% Greek, but the movie made them out to be absolute idiots (their homes especially). In the last move, Toula ended up being a very strong character, but she is back to being frumpy again at the beginning of the 2nd movie and having to find herself again. The list goes on and on and there are just too many reasons to skip this movie. Go back and watch the first one, laugh and enjoy it, and don't ruin it by witnessing this disappointment.

I saw this movie in the theater and knew I would bring it home when it was released on DVD/Blu-ray. Although the first film will be my favorite, I really enjoyed seeing the sequel. It was nice to catch up with the characters and see where life had taken them and see how they grapple with current issues and family drama. The film, the characters, the story were all easy to relate to and felt authentic (but perhaps a bit exaggerated for comedic/dramatic purposes). If you're looking for a feel-good movie with some ups and downs along the way, why not give this film a chance?

With so much time having passed, it's hard to believe a sequel like this would even be tolerable, much less good. But it is pretty good, in fact. It doesn't repeat too many old jokes, and that's for the better. The only moment that's truly cringe worthy is the moment where the entire family is out jogging to "We Are Family." Ugh! Beyond that, I liked the movie very much. Like the first, it's a great romantic getaway for you and the significant other.

The problem with most comedy sequels is that they tend to hit the same comedic beats as the original. This movie is no different. It is still enjoyable and funny but not that different than the first one. If you really liked the first movie and want to catch up on the characters 10 years later then definitely check it out. If you did not enjoy the first movie you sould avoid this one altogether. My wife and I liked it but not nearly as much as the original.

Enjoyed it just as much as the first. Maybe more, as all the same lovable characters/actors returned with a few new ones..so it had a sense of familiarity and life goes on. Rare for a sequel to make you laugh as much as the original movie. One for the whole family to laugh at and enjoy! If you haven't seen the original...it's a must, however, you don't have to see it to enjoy the second.

It took a long time to get to an actual sequel. They did have some off handed sequel or something, but this is the definition of a sequel. It was a good continuation of the first one. Having most everyone back was great and it seemed like the chemistry was still there. It was a good movie with many laugh out loud moments. We all need a little Greek in the family.
