After his parents are killed in a car accident, a young boy named Pete (Oakes Fegley) finds an unlikely caregiver in the form of a dragon (whom he dubs "Elliot") living in a forest in the Pacific Northwest. Years later, a forest ranger (Bryce Dallas Howard) discovers Pete and takes him in, but his attempts to adjust to a normal life are complicated by a man (Karl Urban) who wants to hunt down Elliot. I vaguely remembered parts of the original "Pete's Dragon", and although it's nostalgic it's pretty silly. This remake wisely avoids the silliness and the singing, and changes the story and location completely. It's an exhilarating, exciting, and heartfelt film that was evidently, truly crafted with love and care. Pete's relationship with Elliott is one for the ages -- two best friends -- and you'll definitely get an emotional lump in your throat more than a few times. The entire cast is excellent, starting with Oakes Fegley as Pete. He's a remarkable young talented actor. I've never cared much for Bryce Dallas Howard before, but I liked her a lot here in her character. And what a treat to have Robert Redford in the film; he's scruffy and warm and wise here. The thrilling action scenes are well balanced by the more intimate, emotional dramatic scenes. I watch it frequently.
