“Can you control the volume of the subwoofer if you only have the speakers and not the soundbar?”

There's no separate volume control per se with the sub. In the Roku audio settings, you can set the sub to no bass, low bass or loud/high bass (can't remember how the last 1 is worded). Hope that answers your question.

If the TV volume controls the subwoofer volume. Can also turn the bass on and off through the TV

Not sure on that one! Will say I love the sub, but then after trying several sound bars from Sonos to Bose, etc. I really love the sound bar as well which includes 4K tv and voice control. I have now added Roku speakers for full room experience. I love when all recognize their own and work flawlessly together, I will add that dialogue isolation was a biggie for me and sound bar exceeded my expectations.
