If you have a protection plan then they'll cover it. However they have to order and ship one to you instead of doing a simple exchange even if it's available on the show floor.
This was my experience this past weekend and I'm still waiting on my controller to be shipped. I hope at the very least it's a new one and not a refurbished replacement.
I wish this was outlined when setting up an appointment with geek squad beforehand else I would've just bought a new controller so I wouldn't be left with no way to use the PS5 till the replacement controller arrives.

They try to tell me it dont cover it just the system which makes no sense plus the guy in gaming said there's a one time exchange

It covers a one time replacement of the accessories that came in the box with the console.

As per my experience you'll get an Xbox one controller and not a series X. Not happy about it

Yes, it covered ours, my son dropped it and it broke, you just have to call and they will send it in the mail.
