“Some reviews says this laptop gets hot when playing games. Does it get hot when not playing games. I'll be running matlab simulations, microsoft word and searching the internet. Does anyone think those applications will cause it to get hot?”

I don’t know anything about the simulations but with basic things like mic word it’ll be fine. I don’t think it gets too hot as long your not running max settings when you’re playing games (even then you can get a good few hours before it gets too hot) the fans can get pretty loud tho
