When your phone is not in silent mode it will send your notification sound through the headphones or your ringtone if you get a call.

I do all the time and had no set up in order to do so. The headphones give you the normal notification sounds you would get from your phone.

If your phone makes noise that sound come through the this Bluetooth head set, I did nothing to my phone or head set and I get all my different beeps through the day, text message, emails, Ring doorbell, Garage door alert.
