“My upper cabinets are 16" deep and the cutout for the microwave is 30" wide. Will it work to open the door given the depth of these cabinets? or does opening the door require extra clearance? Thanks! Leah”

The door opens about a half inch out, so I don't think you would have enough clearance since your cabinets would be flush with the front of the microwave.
