• In order to use a Dot to control lights in your home you must have "smart" lights. Phillips Hue or Wemo are some examples.

• You can either get a special light bulb or a new light switch. It has to hook up to the wifi.

• If you want to control light bulbs you will need to pick a compatible "smart" light bulb or automation system. I have a second generation Hue hub with a few light bulbs and they work seemleessly with the Echo Dot.

• You will definitely need smart lights to be able to turn them on or off. I have the Philips hue system and they work together perfectly.
