Yes an app must be installed as part of the set routine. You don't need to use the app afterwards though, unless you are changing, adding, deleting, devices or routines or trouble shooting.

Yes .yu need Amazon Alexa and Amazon Music. It’s easy set up after you download those free apps. You can upgrade for about $4.00 a month to be able to choose specific artists but I’ve been satisfied with the free version
