I have four dots, bought at different times. So I've contacted Amazon tech support umpteen times over the past couple of years. In theory, having a computer or a smartphone shouldn't make any difference, as long as you have the Amazon app up and running ... the app seems to cause more problems than anything else. So again, according to Amazon, if your mom has a Kindle Fire, she should be able to download the app with no problem and use a dot or dots just fine. I really hope this helps!

To set up an Echo Dot, you only need a device that is connected to the wifi and has the Alexa app on it. If you can download the Alexa app onto the Kindle, then you can use it to set up the Echo Dot.
