Slightly larger, nicer looking mesh fabric instead of plastic, and much better sounding speaker are the main things. Also the newer one can be used in a stereo pair if you have two of them.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The second generation dot doesn’t have a very good sound. the third generation is much better - it sounds just like the big echo to me. also I’ve had multiple second generation dots die. so far so good with the third generation.
