First, yes, they have to stay plugged in to work. Second, I have four dots (they are NOT synced) in different areas of the house so they can be used separately. I thought that if I did NOT sync them they could be used separately by different family members. They answer questions, etc., separately, just fine, but if any of us tries to play MUSIC while another dot is playing music one of the dots says something like "Music is being accessed by another device; would you like to use this device INSTEAD?" It's frustrating, but we haven't found a solution and the Amazon tech people have given us conflicting information. So no, music is the one sticking point. You'd have to have each dot hooked up to a separate account.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes each dot can play different music, configured in that manner in the Amazon alexa app on your mobile device. They must be plugged into power in order to use, they do not have any type of battery.
