• You do NOT need a 4K tv to use the 4K firestick. This 4K firestick has a faster processor and more buffering ram than the 2nd gen firestick. The stick is awesome and runs about 15% faster than the last model.

• No - the 4K stick will work on a regular HD (1080) TV. I'm in the same scenario and spent the extra $10 for the 4k version so that it will work on my next TV. But until I replace my TV with a 4k one, this stick is working fine.
