I would think you would need it unless you want specific programming provided on fire stick.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.A fire stick gives you the flexibility to add a wide variety of apps and even download and install apps from unknown sources. A Smart has popular apps used but may not have availability of apps that are from third parties or sometimes it wont have apps that become newly available (Like Disney+). If you know you use Netflix for everything you can sign into the app using the TV and it will show without having to change inputs.
