No it is a stand alone unit. Also it functions as a just the same as a echo. I can Hit the talk button which takes you to Alexa for a search across all of your platforms such as HULU, HBO, Netflix, Prime, and many more. I also have Wemo switches throughout our house and can control them by telling Alexa to turn on Kitchen light. It can absolutely act as a stand-alone unit or it can be linked to the others. No, you don't have to own an Alexa Echo in order to use the voice remote. All you need to do to use the voice remote feature is hold down the microphone key and use the magic word... Alexa along with whatever you wish to watch on TV. Enjoy!
