It’s a media player. You watch movies and some of your regular tv shows too. It works with Samsung tv. I have that one as well as a Visio. However, you need internet service to operate.

When it is, it accepts your signal and streams all television applications that you purchase. We purchased a Hulu Live TV account, have Netflix, and an Amazon Prime account that includes Amazon TV, and purchased the Disney + service. With these four accounts, we can watch all the TV we had when we used to have an account with a national satellite TV provider and we have the same TV for less than half the cost. If you have a 2.4G / 5G router in your home from an internet provider, you can easily 'cut the cord' from any other cable or satellite TV provider and subscribe to the television broadcasting you want to have at a very reduced price. Your question regarding a 40" TV not connected to a cable; the answer is "yes". So long as the TV has a place to plug the FireStick in, and you have home wifi, yes you can get broadcasting on the TV.

It allows you to stream video content from the internet to you TV, they do work with DUMB tv’s that aren’t smart. Some content is free programming, like Pluto, Tubi ...... You do need to have Wifi access, so the cable company still has your wallet.
