You do need an Amazon account. We are also Amazon Prime members so we get a lot of free prime movies, There are other movies you do have to pay for to watch, but they are only a few dollars. Hence the reason for needing the Amazon account.

You can set up a free Amazon account on a computer. It doesn't cost to use the fire stick but it does require you to save payment info to do anything. Basically like google play and iTunes.

It does require an amazon account for purchasing apps, like netflix, hulu, youtube. With that being said a paid subscription is not required unless you want to enjoy content like amazon prime or the video on demand features of amazon video.

Otherwise, if you just want it for Netflix you just need a Netflix account.
