The Amazon Fire Stick does not offer any Channel, this is not a cable company, but a media streamer. The fire Stick will let you use Hulu, NetFlix, FOXSport, ESPN, etc...If you already are a subscriber. They also have free apps that let you watch free live TV, but nothing from cable. 
However you can download an APP called USTVNOW for free, this app will let you watch local TV for free with a good resolution, and for a 19.99 USD monthly premium you can enjoy cable TV channels like SYFY, FOX, History, TNT etc. This APP does not come with Amazon Fire TV but you can side load it.

I get any channel but I do not get my local news but that can be fixed.

The device is not literally tv. It is a device compiled with various apps like Netflix, Hulu, HBO Now, etc. the bigger apps require a monthly subscription but there are many apps that are free to use (I.e. Pluto tv, crackle). The device just relies on your wifi connection.
