Why do I need a firestick with a smart tv? null

Unfortunately not all smart TVs come with the option to download apps. I had to find that out the hard way when I purchased my first smart TV and it only came with Netflix and some other random apps. The fire stick allows you to download 100+ streaming apps and also offers the Silk browser to access web pages.

You don't. If you already have a Smart TV, then you should be able to stream with it and not need to connect a separate streaming device.
