No you do not have to join Amazon Prime service for this to work however it does give you access to a lot of content on the device. You can use it to play games, or use apps like Netflix, YouTube, HBO Go, Sling, Plex, and many others.

Most of the movies are lower in popularity ones though. You do not have to be a Prime member to use the Firestick, just have WiFi internet access. I use mine for many different uses, including quickly getting answers to questions I might have. I enjoy the dependable voice command searches too.

If it's content you seek, Roku offers much more, but their devices then to be short-lived. Whichever device you choose, Netflix offers the most bang for the buck, and it's commercial-free. For most people, Fire-stick amounts to little more than a gimmick to get you to sign up for Amazon Prime. If you shop at Amazon frequently, it may work to your advantage. Most of us choose to forego Amazon for small purchases, choosing to use eBay, instead.
