“do I need an echo dot for the Fire TV With alexa voice remote”

You can get an echo and sync it to your fire tv. This allows you to play pause ect on videos without touching the remote. However, the fire tv remote has Alexa built into the remote. So it'll do all the things echo can except you have to press and hold the mic button in order to speak to Alexa. It's not hands free like the echo.

No you do not although I believe you can hook up your echo dot to your fire stick

You do not need a echo for for your firestick. You can activate your voice for Alexa straight from the firestick controller.
