No, you do not need a smart tv but you do need a internet with wireless modem because the fire tv doesn’t come with a LAN port

Please try again later.I have a smart TV as well but it has become slow over the years and it does no longer offer youtube, so I got this fire tv so I can watch youtube and have the other things my Tv offered but faster. So if your smart tv is new then Fire TV probably does the same thing, My tv is about 5 years old so this helps out a lot, and my smart tv does not have voice recognition so thats a plus, hope that helps.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.One of the main purposes of the fire is to make any tv with hdmi inputs a smart tv, so no you don't need a smart tv to use this. It makes a dumb tv smart, and a moderately smart tv smarter.
